About the Role

accentedge’s BSL-2 wet lab generates the multiomics data that powers ABCD. The Laboratory Director leads day-to-day operations of the DNA Sequencing & Medical Science Research Lab — sample accessioning through sequencing and QC — and keeps a future CAP/CLIA clinical-laboratory accreditation path open.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise a team of 10 (8 bench scientists plus computational/supervisory staff) across nucleic-acid extraction, library prep, QC, and sequencing.
• Own lab operations for short-read (Illumina-class) and long-read (Oxford Nanopore or PacBio) DNA/RNA sequencing.
• Serve as or appoint the Biosafety Officer; maintain the written biosafety manual and chemical hygiene plan (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1450).
• Ensure BSL-2 operations per CDC/NIH BMBL 6th Edition and alignment with CAP and CLIA expectations.
• Manage chain-of-custody and specimen inventory tracking with periodic reconciliation.
• Oversee cold storage integrity (−80°C, −20°C, +4°C, and LN2) including standby-power and alarm protocols.
• Coordinate with AI Development on the cadence of data handoff from bench to model.

Required Qualifications

• PhD in molecular biology, genomics, or a related discipline (or MS with extensive experience).
• 8+ years of laboratory experience including 3+ years leading a sequencing or molecular diagnostics lab.
• Hands-on expertise with NGS workflows, library preparation, and QC.
• Strong knowledge of BSL-2 biosafety, ANSI Z358.1 eyewash/shower requirements, and lab safety regulations.
• Experience managing scientific staff and lab budgets.

Preferred Qualifications

• CAP/CLIA accreditation experience or a high-complexity laboratory directorship qualification.
• Experience with long-read platforms (Oxford Nanopore, PacBio).
• Familiarity with multiomics assays beyond genomics (proteomics, metabolomics).

A Day in the Role

This is an on-site, lab-based role at the Chicago HQ. The Director works across the open lab, sequencing room, and write-up zone, balancing bench oversight, safety compliance, and scientific coordination with the AI teams.
